Story: Paradox’s Despair – Chapter 99

Twilight paced about a hundred feet away from the gate of Tartarus. She kept glancing at it waiting for Discord to emerge. She turned to pace back and ran into him. “Oof!”

“You didn’t have to wait.” He smiled at her, glanced around, picked her up and hugged her. “You’re a good friend. Thank you.”

When he placed her back on the ground she wobbled slightly, fluffed out her wings. “You’re welcome. So what happened? Why are you able to get into Tartarus so easily? Who was talking to you? Did you get whoever to release Celestia? I need to know. Details!”

He sighed. “Twilight you should just ask one question at a time.”

She bit her lower lip and trotted in place. “What happened?”

“I don’t know.” He muttered. “I think there is something else at work here. My children need sleep, we need sleep.” He grinned suddenly at the thought of sleep. “Twilight, did the chaotic buffer work?”

Twilight looked up at him confused. “What is a chaotic buffer?”

He started walking and she walked with him. “It was the box, did it work?”

She blinked. “Luna had brought it to the room when I was asleep. I didn’t dream about you. What is a chaotic buffer?”

He nodded. “Yes. I don’t give that box to just any pony. You wanted me out of your head that was the only solution. Do you feel differently about me now?”

“I don’t think I need to um…” She blushed and looked the other direction.

“Hah. That’s hilarious. You’re thinking about me again.”

“That isn’t fair Discord. How can I not think about you when you’re right in front of me?”

He shook his head. “Sorry Twilight, I guess you aren’t being completely honest with me… Let’s get back to Canterlot. I guess we’ll have to talk more about this later.”

The gates of Tartarus loomed in front of them. They were securely locked and Cerberus was laying on his stomach gnawing on a large bone. One of his three heads looked up at Discord and Twilight and growled menacingly.

“Well, it looks secure.” Twilight said nervously.

“Yes, so it seems.” Discord said, then he turned as he got down to look her in the eyes. “Twilight, it was a pleasure bothering, pestering and annoying you… if I do not come back… Tell Fluttershy I love her a lot.”

“Discord…” Twilight said.

“Please tell her that.” He said as he grabbed Twilight’s hoof. “She is my love and eternal light to my darkened day. I… I need you to tell her that.”

“I’ll tell her.” Twilight said as she fought back the tears that were threatening to escape. “But you should tell her that yourself.”

“I… will if I can…” He stood up and turned to face the gates of Tartarus. “I have come to see my brother.” Cerberus suddenly got up as all three heads started to snarl at him as he approached. “Let me enter!”

Twilight gasped when the gates suddenly opened for him. “Welcome back… Discord or shall I say… War?” A deep voice intoned. “Come and we’ll have a chat. Will your friend be joining us?”

“No… She was only a guide.” He said as the gates closed behind him. “She’s not coming.”

“So shall it be.” The voice said.

Twilight blinked as Discord disappeared from view. She didn’t know if she should wait or go back. She decided to wait.

“Are thou sure ye need to do this?” Luna asked.

“It’s my brother, I thought he was gone forever but apparently being sent to Tartarus wasn’t enough for him; he had to become a demon. Trying to corrupt my children in their dreams… possessing them. The only way I can think of getting rid of him is to go to Tartarus and confront him there.”

“I’ll take you to the gates of Tartarus.” Twilight said quietly.

His ears went up as he looked at her. “Twilight, I wouldn’t ask you to lead me somewhere as dangerous as the gates of Tartarus.”

“I’ve been there before. I had to take Cerberus there when he wandered away. That was when Tirek escaped without our knowledge.” She put her head down. “Anyway, I can accompany you.”

“Thank you Twilight.” He looked at Luna. “It seems that he can only corrupt my children when they sleep, can you make sure they do not sleep until we get back?”

“That may become difficult.” Luna confessed. “We shall try our best. Good Luck Discord.”

Both Discord and Twilight disappeared in a flash of light.
